Want to get rid of that dull complexion? Want to say bye-bye acne and hello clear skin? Want that golden hour glow all day long, but don’t know how to get it? For people looking to curate their own skincare routine it can be overwhelming. Many people are intimidated by 10-step routines and worry that all skincare routines will be time consuming. But not to fear, your skincare routine is as unique as you and you can personalize it to your heart’s content. There are endless combinations depending on skin concerns, skin type, and amount of steps. Today we’ll focus on curating a skincare routine perfect for beginners that won’t hurt your pockets. So let’s get started on creating your very own routine!
The first decision you have to make is how often you’ll do your skincare routine. The most effective routines are done in the morning and evening.
"Morning routines prepare your skin for the day ahead and evening routines help repair your skin."
You might only wash your face in the morning right now and think that’s enough, but imagine what you put your skin through during the day. Sun exposure, pollutants, sweat. All of this takes a toll on your skin and if you don’t take time to do your routine at night your skin will try to repair itself on top of all of that gunk. You’ll keep having major breakouts if you don’t take a little extra time to care for yourself.
Step 1: Cleanser
The first step in your skincare routine is the most basic step, cleansing. This step is always the beginning and you’ve probably been doing this step for years in some form or another. In the morning a quick wash with a gentle cleanser is perfect. African black soap is a perfect all natural choice for this step and as a bonus it’s naturally exfoliating. In the evening, you might want to go with a double cleanse. A double cleanse is most often used to remove makeup more efficiently, but you can also use it to help get rid of dirt stuck deep in your pores. For a double cleanse just rub an oil-based cleanser into the skin thoroughly and wash it off with warm water. Then follow with a water-based cleanser. There are plenty of oil based cleansers on the market, but I find coconut oil work just as well.
Step 2: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is great for getting rid of that layer of dead skin that leaves our faces looking dull, but should only be a part of your routine a couple days of the week. Add an exfoliator to your p.m. routine to allow your skin time to heal before sun exposure. You can use a manual or chemical exfoliate. For beginners it can be as easy as washing your face with a warm cloth instead of lathering your soap in your hands. There’s no need to go out and buy exfoliating pads or soap with walnut shells and micro-beads. Let’s keep it simple!
Step 3: Toner
Toner is the secret to achieving a clear complexion. My favorite toner is rose water, but you can also use rice water or witch hazel. Toner can be applied by swiping it over your face with a cotton pad. I’ve found that pouring a bit directly into your hands or spritzing right onto your face and patting it into your skin saves quite a bit of product and leaves me feeling refreshed.
Step 4: Moisturizer
Moisturizing rehydrates your face. It’s important to make sure that we restore the oils that are stripped from our face during cleansing. To do so I recommend using a hydrating oil or lotion moisturizer. Shea butter adds a youthful glow and helps give you beautiful, even skin. Simply apply to your face and allow it to soak in. Make sure to only use the necessary amount so you don’t oversaturate your skin.
Step 5: Sunscreen
It’s essential for everyone! I know we’re all eager to get outside and soak up the sun this summer and we don’t want to damage our skin while we do it. Make sure to end your morning routine with sunscreen and allow it to sit for 20 minutes before heading outside. Let your sunscreen absorb into the skin and fully form the protective layer. You might look at all this and think, this is still too much work. Don’t worry! You can still simplify even more.
"If you’re looking for a super quick option to start your day just cleanse, moisturize, and apply sunscreen."

Be patient: Don’t worry if you’re not seeing any progress right away. It takes 4-8 weeks to see results.
Be consistent: Your skincare routine should be a part of your daily life, not just when you need some extra pampering. taking an extra 10 minutes each day payoff!
Be careful: It’s always important to do patch tests on your neck or arm when trying new products. Apply a small amount to your skin and wait 24 hours to see if there are any negative reactions.
Be worried: Some people may experience purging when trying new products. This is seen in many cases when using African black soap for the first time. Your skin may flare up before getting better, but it is always best to consult a dermatologist before continuing use.
Consistency is key. It takes time, but it will all be worth it. I believe in you!
